Instalation Instructions (text only)

Recycled Leather tiles are made from genuine leather using leather and other binding agents. The natural leather fibers must be treated as leather for maximum performance throughout the lifetime of the product.
Floor and wall tiles are easy to install. The installation is similar to the installation of a vinyl or cork floor – but requires more diligence, time, and precision to ensure adhesion.  Effective leather tile installation depends on a clean, dust-free environment. Leather tiles are adversely affected by humidity. It is not recommended to install floor tiles in areas with less than 20% average humidity or in high moisture areas such as bathrooms or basements. Leather floor tiles should be the last product you install in your room.

LET THE TILES BREATHE -

Remove packing and allow the tiles to acclimate for 2-3 days on location at normal room temperature.   The acclimation process must take place with tiles out in the open. For example, you may wish to place the tiles standing against each other like this /\ or placed against a wall to allow air circulation.

PREPARE THE SUB-FLOOR –

Leather floor and wall tiles must be installed on a clean surface.  Application to concrete is possible, but direct application to ½” AC plywood is the best method for adhesion and comfort.  Seams or nail/screw holes should be filled (use Ardex feather finish).   Do not install on below-grade surfaces due to humidity problems.  The floor should be flush and present no protrusions.  Leather amplifies any imperfections found in the sub-floor – if the floor is not flush, a small nail head will look like a pea once the leather is installed.

GLUE AND INSTALLATION –

Tiles should be laid in the same manner as you would with regular tiles.  Do not attempt to lay tiles at temperatures below 50F or above 90F.   Use only one of the recommended adhesives below and follow the instructions of the manufacturer.  Apply TWO coats of premium grade WATER-BASED contact cement for excellent adhesion letting the adhesive dry completely before the second coat.  Apply the glue evenly all the way to the corners and the edges of the tile. The recommended adhesive is Wilson Art International H20  Water Based Contact Cement.    Contact  - 800 433 3222 for distributors in your area.

ROLLING AND ACCLIMATION –

Once your tiles are laid, remove any trapped air from the tiles by using a 75 pound tile roller.   For walls, use a rubber hammer to pounce the surface of the tile.   Once you have passed on all the tiles with the roller or a rubber hammer, ensure superior adhesion on all seams by rolling a 2” cove-base J-roller by hand, applying extensive pressure on the seams.  This will ensure the complete bonding of the tile.  Allow your tiles to set and acclimate for another 24 hours after installation is completed.

WAXING AND BUFFING –

For both floor and wall tiles, apply a wax coating using a wax applicator and buffer (available at Sears) or by hand.   The application of three coats of wax is recommended, at a minimum of 30 minutes interval.  Buff the wax between each coat.  You may use a polishing machine to buff the floors a/o walls.   The wax that we recommend is:
Butcher’s Bowling Alley Wax (normally available at Home Depot)
TreWax Paste Wax (available at ACE Hardware Stores)
